According to Wellmann Insurance Agency, Inc. President David Wellmann, the key to success in the insurance business is no secret.

“I have said it a million times, but it’s true—we just work harder for our customers,” David says.

The agency works hard for the community as well. In fact, when we caught up with David at the agency’s Brenham, Texas, headquarters for this article, he was staffing the reception desk because the rest of the office was out volunteering at a local food bank.

“We support the communities where we do business as much as we can. The community sees that, our customers see that, our prospects see that, and they appreciate it,” says David.

Honest Service

David began his insurance career in 1986 after graduating from Sam Houston State University and became a partner at Lange & Associates Insurance in 1992. Wellmann Insurance Agency, Inc. was established in 2000 through a merger of Lange & Associates Insurance Agency and Ehlert Insurance Agency.

Today, the Texas agency has grown to 24 employees spread across its headquarters and branch offices in Bryan/College Station, Sugar Land, Giddings, and Port O’Connor.

“Our people truly care. Everyone has heart and a service mentality,” David says. “They truly take ownership of customers’ personal and business insurance needs.”

Honesty has also been an important, constant factor in the agency’s relationship with carriers and customers.

“By focusing on delivering excellent, ethical service, it correlates to referrals, which is our best source of new business,” David says. “Our customers and our carriers trust us because of the partnerships we build and the standards we hold.”

Wellmann Insurance’s book is nearly evenly split between commercial and personal lines. “We’re a generalist—we try to diversify and not put all our eggs in one basket. I’ve seen too many agencies put a ton of energy into a niche market with a carrier that is here today and gone tomorrow.”

The agency’s approach to business makes it a natural fit for Acuity. “Acuity is strong and stable, with a broad appetite—it’s a great partnership,” David says.

Future Focus

In an era of agency mergers and acquisitions, Wellmann Insurance is committed to remaining locally and family owned. David’s sons, Matthew and Blake, are poised to take over the reins when David decides to retire.

“I’ve been approached many times to sell, but every family discussion has resulted in the same decision—selling would not be in the best interests of our employees and customers, some of whom have been here for many years,” David says.

“I still love coming in every day and working with great people and helping our customers,” says David. “When the time comes for a change, I know this agency will be in good hands.”
