If you’ve decided to try your hand at growing your own vegetables, there are a few basic things you will want to consider.

  1. Only grow what you’ll eat – If you start too big, it can quickly become a lot to maintain. To start small, focus on only growing quantities that you can reasonably consume. If you grow too much, you might end up wasting much of the harvest! Also, don’t grow vegetables you won’t eat.
  2. Plants versus seeds – In your first year, it might be easier to buy starter plants rather than starting from seeds. If you do plan to start with seeds, they may need to be planted and started inside to start growing before your climate might be able to sustain them. Consider your region and the hardiness of the plants when planning.
  3. Consider your space – Another reason to start small might be the space you have available—especially important if your vegetable garden is your apartment balcony! Do your research and understand how much space each plant will need as it grows. Be sure to properly space plants so they don’t get crowded and you have room to weed and harvest when the time comes.
  4. Location, location, location – Like other plants, vegetables will thrive in the correct balance of sun, soil quality, and water. Be sure your new garden is stocked with quality soil and appropriate drainage. Water and sun are a must.

With a little bit of planning, you can set yourself up for a successful and bountiful vegetable garden. What are some of your vegetable garden tips?
