5 Ways to Avoid Winter Claims this Fall

Spring may be the season typically associated with cleaning, but it’s just as important to do cleanup around the home in fall. Putting things in order and tending to minor maintenance now can help homeowners avoid insurance claims and other problems when winter weather arrives.

• Beat the draft. Keep the warmth in and the cold air out this winter. Inspect common problem areas, including windows and doors, vents, pipes, and other openings. Fill any cracks, repair caulking, and replace components that are worn. If you feel air coming through electrical outlets, it could be a sign of an insulation problem or damage to siding or brickwork. 

• Keep it clear. The areas around your furnace, electrical panel, and water tank should all be kept clear, so they can be easily accessed if there is an emergency.

• Turn it off. Shut off the water supply to all outdoor water faucets. Disconnect, drain, and store outdoor hoses.
