As the warmer weather approaches, so does the potential for spring storms, which can bring heavy rains, intense winds, and even severe weather conditions. Focusing on spring storm preparedness can help protect the people and things that matter most. Here are seven essential tips to help safeguard your home and loved ones.

  1. Review Insurance Coverage. Regularly reviewing your home insurance policy and knowing what storm-related damage is covered can provide peace of mind. Depending on your circumstances, you may want to add optional coverages. For instance, you may purchase flood insurance if you live in an area prone to flooding.

  2. Reinforce Your Home. Spring is a great time to assess the condition of your property and inspect your home for vulnerabilities. Take a closer look at your gutters, roof, chimney, and windows.
    • Clean and evaluate rain gutters to ensure they are firmly attached and direct water away from your home and foundation.
    • Check the roof for missing or damaged shingles and signs of leaking.
    • Evaluate the chimney for cracks and signs of unwanted pests.
    • Check around windows for moisture or air gaps to improve energy efficiency and reduce structural issues and moisture problems.

  3. Maintain Sump Pump and Drainage Systems. Spring is often when sump pumps work the hardest. Ensure your sump pumps and drainage systems are in good working order and flow away from your home to prevent water in basements and low-lying areas of your property. Consider investing in a battery backup for extra protection.

  4. Inspect and Maintain Trees. While trees offer many benefits, they can cause problems as they grow. Overhanging branches can pose a significant threat to your home during storms. To reduce the risk of damage during a storm, keep branches trimmed so they are not hanging over the roof, rubbing up against the siding, or near any power lines.

  5. Secure Outdoor Items. It is a good idea to secure or bring patio tables and chairs, grills, and other outdoor items indoors to protect and prevent them from flying into windows, siding, and parked cars during a storm or high winds.

  6. Seal Gaps and Cracks. Inspect your home thoroughly for any gaps or cracks that could allow water infiltration during heavy rainfall or invite insects and small rodents into your home. Seal gaps or cracks near windows and doors. Sometimes, new weather-stripping can do wonders.

  7. Educate Yourself About Storm Preparedness. Storms happen, but being prepared can ease some of the stress.
    • Invest in a weather radio and keep your cell phone charged to keep you connected during a storm.
    • Create an emergency kit with bottled water, non-perishable food, sleeping materials, flashlights, and extra batteries.
    • Develop a family emergency plan to help keep everyone safe and prepared.

By incorporating these seven essential strategies, you can enhance your readiness and protect your property during spring storm season. Remember, taking steps now can help you navigate stormy weather with greater confidence and resilience.
