As we approach spring and active growing season in many areas, you may be starting to think about how to get your landscape in top shape. Whether you are putting in a new yard or patching thin or dry spots, there are a few things you can do to give your grass the best chance of growing.

Good soil. Nutrient rich soil is a must when trying to grow grass! If you are planting a new yard, it is a good idea to have a thick topsoil layer. In established yards, clear out the small areas of dead grass and add good topsoil before reseeding. Good soil is the first step to good grass.

The right seed. Depending on where you live or the amount of sun or shade, there are different grass seeds available. While this may seem like a minor piece, buying seed varieties not suited for your area may result in inadequate growth or inability to survive your climate conditions.

Proper moisture. After you’ve made sure you have good soil and the right seed, the next step is to properly water. How much is often dependent on the type of grass you’ve decided to plant. Also, if you live in a hot climate, you might need to water more often to keep the grass seed from drying out. A good way to help retain moisture is to cover the new seed with straw. Some types of seed now come with a coating that helps fertilize and maintain moisture.

If your lawn is looking healthy you can give it a boost by over-seeding for a fuller look. During the growing season, putting your grass clippings back onto the lawn can act as fertilizer and allow the nutrients to go back into the soil. It is important not to cut your grass too short, as that can add stress and cause areas of die-out. Seasonal aeration and fertilization of your lawn is also a common way to get necessary nutrients down to the roots of the lawn.

Many people take great pride in having the top lawn in the neighborhood. These tips will help improve the overall health of your lawn. Once the work is done, sit back and enjoy! What are some things you do to keep your lawn looking great?
