6 Tips to Get Your RV Ready for Use

Ready to get your RV out of storage and on the road? Before you pack up, do a checkup on your RV to help ensure it  is safe and ready for your adventures ahead.

• Clean. Start with a thorough cleaning of the vehicle from top to bottom, inside and out. As you clean, inspect for damage such as leaks, cracks, or holes. Don’t forget about the awnings, vents, and outside access covers.
• Water. Flush the RV water system of antifreeze and fill the water tank. Check faucets, seals, valves, and hoses for any water leaks and repair as needed. Replace weather stripping around windows, doors, and the roof that shows signs of cracking or separation.
• Batteries. Charge the RV batteries to a full charge. Clean the terminals and check electrolyte levels. Change out the batteries on smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, flashlights, and weather radios. This is also a good time to make sure the fire extinguisher is full and first-aid kit is replenished.
• Tires. Assess the tread and tire pressure on all tires, including the spare. Note any cracks that may warrant repair or replacing. Tighten up loose lug nuts. A tire blowout can delay or end your vacation early.
• Test. Examine your RV’s appliances and electrical items prior to your trip. Take it to a service shop if you are not comfortable doing this yourself. Check that the propane tank, generator, stove, burners, refrigerator, furnace, AC, water heater, and lights are working. Start the engine and check the readings on all gauges. As with any vehicle, consult the owner’s manual for proper levels and maintenance.
