6 Items to Keep In Your Car This Winter

Preparing for winter weather means getting out the winter gear, including warm clothing, blankets, and kitty litter—for your car, of course! Here are some items that can help you prevent or deal with a winter emergency while on the road.

• Ice scraper and snow brush. When the temperature starts to drop, put an ice scraper and snow brush in your car. Use them to remove snow and ice before you drive, so you have clear visibility and to prevent snow and ice from flying off your car and onto another vehicle.
• Shovel. Keep a small or collapsible shovel in your trunk in case your car is stuck in snow or you must clear a path to drive.
• Warm clothing. Wearing a hat, coat, gloves, and boots will help keep you warm while clearing off your car or if the heater goes out. Hand warmers and a blanket could also keep you cozy.
• Light. Since there is less daylight in winter, it can be more difficult to see what is wrong with your vehicle or to be seen by others if your car breaks down. Keep a flashlight and emergency flares or reflectors in your car to help with visibility.
• Windshield washer fluid with antifreeze. This will prevent your windshield from freezing and give you a cleaner line of sight while driving. It may also be a good time to replace the windshield wipers.
• Kitty litter or sand. If your car gets stuck in the snow or on the ice, putting down either of these will help your tires gain traction and keep you moving.

Plan ahead and put these items in your car before winter weather comes. These are in addition to the items that should be in your car year-round, such as a first-aid kit, cell phone charger, jumper cables, bottled water, non-perishable snacks, and sunglasses. Drive safely this winter!
