General liability insurance

Coverage to meet your needs

What is general liability insurance?

General liability insurance acts as a safety net for your business. Also known by commercial liability insurance, comprehensive general liability, and business liability insurance, this policy serves as a backup plan. It provides coverage for unexpected business-related incidents that may result in:

  • Bodily injury to a third party
  • Property damage to someone else’s property
  • Personal & advertising injury
  • Medical payments for small claims that cause injury without establishing that the insured was at fault

Why do I need general liability insurance?

General liability insurance protects your company from financial losses due to common business risks. This coverage safeguards against costs arising from lawsuits or claims related to injuries, property damage, or advertising injury. It enhances your professional credibility and provides peace of mind, minimizing unforeseen incidents that could disrupt your operations.

How much does general liability insurance cost?

The cost depends on several factors, including your location, number of employees, and the level of risk your business faces. To determine the cost for your business, get a free quote!

What does general liability cover?

A general liability policy provides four primary coverages:

  • Bodily injury covers medical expenses and lost wages.
  • Property damage covers repair or replacement of damaged property and loss of use.
  • Personal injury covers lawsuits for libel or slander.
  • Advertising injury covers copyright infringement in marketing materials and privacy violations, such as using someone’s likeness without permission.

An Acuity general liability policy also includes medical payments for small claims that cause injury without establishing fault.

What type of events can general liability coverage help pay for?

If a business is covered with a general liability policy, it can help pay for incidents such as:

  • Accidents involving visitors or third-party individuals that occur on your business location and result in injury.
  • Legal defense costs when a client sues you for breach of contract, even if the case is unfounded.
  • Rental property damage repair costs caused by accidental damage to your leased office space.
  • Settlements and judgments are covered up to the policy limit if your business is found liable in court or a settlement is awarded.

FAQs

Have questions? We have answers.

Professional liability can help protect against claims arising from errors, omissions, or negligence in the professional services provided. For example, a client requests a specific shade of color, but the result is much darker than requested. Professional liability can address the dissatisfaction related to the color treatment.

General liability can protect you from financial losses because of accidents or incidents that occur at your work site or premises. For example, a stylist accidentally knocks over a client's phone, which falls on the floor and is damaged. General liablity covers the cost of repairing or replacing the damaged phone. Keep in mind that general liability is not a warranty for your work. Damages from defective workmanship, incorrect installation, or faulty materials are not covered.

Acuity’s Specialized Coverages

While it may not be a legal requirement in most states, it’s something business owners make sure to have. The benefits of having this policy are significant.

It can cover unexpected incidents like a customer's medical bills or a lawsuit. Depending on your industry, you may need it for a professional license or to sign a contract for a larger project.

Most states do not require a limited liability corporation (LLC) to have general liability insurance, but it is recommended. It can cover unexpected incidents that may derail your small business. General liability coverage acts as a safety net, allowing Acuity to protect what you created.

General liability coverage does not include theft. General liability covers injury to a third party on your property and other incidents.

Acuity offers Acuity’s Commercial Crime Coverage to protect against the dishonest acts of your employees and others. There are 11 different types of coverages available, from employee theft to counterfeit money.

A certificate of insurance (COI) summarizes insurance coverage. It typically includes the coverage limits, the policyholder name, the policy number, and the date range. Businesses may request this certificate from their vendors before engaging in business together.

Many factors, like the size and nature of your business, the location, and your perceived level of risk, determine how much general liability coverage you need. If you have questions,  the best practice is to work with an agent who can help you.

General liability does not cover cyber liability incidents such as data breaches, cyber liability, or identity theft. Cybercrime is one of the fastest-growing types of crime in the world, and we want to ensure your business is protected from any incidents. Acuity provides cyber insurance which helps shield your business from damages from the following:

  • Cyber Liability coverage sustains your business from unintended spreading of malware or a deliberate act that prevents others from gaining access to your computer system through the Internet.

  • Data Breach coverage protects you from accidentally losing or releasing your customers’ personal information.

  • Identity Theft coverage pays the cost of repairing personal identity.

If you purchase this coverage,  you will receive access to risk management tools, best practice sheets, and a news center.

Unfortunately, this is not a simple answer. Your general liability policy provides coverage if your business does not sell, manufacture, or furnish alcoholic beverages. Businesses need a separate liquor liability policy to address the unique needs of those businesses.
