5 Tips That Can Help Ensure Your Employees Love Working For You

The success of a business often depends on its employees, and this is especially true in the retail and restaurant industries. Employees are the key to the environment and service that is provided with the products sold.

 

It is no surprise that a lot of attention and effort is placed on employee engagement and creating a happy workplace, because we know that there is a direct relationship between employee engagement and retail sales.

 

So how can you make sure your workforce is engaged and stays engaged? Here are some tips:

 

Be considerate of each individual employee’s well-being. Individuals not feeling healthy, whether physically or emotionally, will not perform at their highest level, which will affect productivity and the customer experience. Encourage sick employees to stay home. Make sure employees feel free to drink water, take a walk on their break, and feel comfortable talking to you. Check out some other simple ways to promote well-being in the workplace.

 

Make sure your employees feel safe in their work environment. Employees need to be comfortable at work in order to direct all of their attention toward providing a good experience to customers. Proper equipment is important. If employees are worried about climbing an unstable ladder or having to over-exert themselves, their customer service is going to suffer. For example, be cognizant of the need for lifting heavy objects, which is often easy to miss. Allowing employees to let you know what they are comfortable lifting will help prevent unsafe working conditions and potential injuries.

 

Help employees find satisfaction in their work. Everyday enjoyment and satisfaction can be difficult to maintain, but an overall feeling of satisfaction with work should be attainable for employees. Make sure your leaders are on the same page and share ideas with employees. It can be as simple as two employees connecting while stocking shelves and making it a competition or game.

 

Limit distractions and continuous multi-tasking so employees can focus and prioritize. Working to complete an important task and being interrupted several times or feeling pressure to complete other important tasks at the same time is stressful. It not only gets in the way of the goals mentioned above, but it also reduces productivity as employees spread their energy thin and wear out more quickly.

 

Help employees connect to your business's mission. If employees know how their work matters, it will mean more to them. Reminding them why they do what they do regularly and celebrating their successes will motivate them to continue doing a good job. Recognizing employees who go the extra mile can be a great way to inspire your team. For example, if an employee helps a disabled customer out to his or her car, recognizing the employee for this task will encourage similar behavior.
